Radio Andrea: Bricks to Microphones
Sep 21st, 2007 by Gary
Radio Andrea 91.4……in Antsohihy on the island of Madagascar. Now that sounds ok?…..but it does not begin to describe the work there. Imagine roads so bad four wheel drives routinely get stuck…and that’s in the dry weather!…for 15 years Chris and Jeanette Fourie have been working there.
75% of the population is under 18…55% are illiterate…95% are NOT Christian. Add in two local languages plus French and English and you begin to see what these wonderful people are up against.
Three years ago they began to get the station to air. To hear Chris talk about having to make every brick from scratch, to hear about the long delays for even a box of screws and to know that electricity is not guaranteed starts to give you some sense of what this amazing couple have done.
On April 1 of this year the station launched ..18 hours a day….from 6am till 8.30 pm.
Now they have half-decent internet connection they would love to hear from you…both Chris and Jeanette would make great interview material. You may email Chris & Jeanette by clicking here.
